Dreams, Determination, and Lacrosse - Barry Fan

Barry Fan, a sophomore at the Ohio State University, is a member of China’s National Lacrosse Team.

As I step onto the lacrosse field, the feeling of my cleats against the fields always tells me how determined each of my strides are. The sun sets over the horizon, casting long shadows that seem to mirror the length of my long pole, a weapon of defense in my capable hands. I am Siwei Fan, a sophomore at The Ohio State University, a long pole on the club lacrosse team, and an honorary member of team China.

At 19, my lacrosse journey began later than most. It wasn't until my second year of high school that I discovered my interest for this sport. In a country where lacrosse is far from a household name, I am a small pioneer in a sense, following in the footsteps of a few predecessors, venturing into uncharted territory with a fierce determination. As I recall those early days, I can't help but smile. The first time I picked up a lacrosse stick, it felt great and drove me to fall in love with the sport. Eventually, the long pole became an instrument of finesse and power, my guardian on the field. Every ground ball, every check, and every defensive play became an opportunity to prove myself not only to my opponents but to the doubters who questioned my decision to embrace this American sport. My lacrosse journey was not without challenges. I dedicated countless hours to training. I devoured videos on lacrosse strategies and I sought guidance from seasoned players who generously shared their wisdom. I was a sponge, absorbing knowledge and experience, all in pursuit of excellence.

In 2022, the world of lacrosse beckoned, and I answered the call. Representing China on the National Team, I embarked on a journey that would take me to the 2022 Lacrosse World Cup in Ireland. This was not just a personal triumph but a testament to the growth of the sport in China. I wore my national jersey with pride, knowing that I was not just playing for myself, but for a nation that was embracing lacrosse with open arms. The challenges I faced on that global stage were immense, but my determination was unwavering. Each ground ball I scooped, every pass I intercepted, and every opponent I thwarted was a testament to my dedication and hard work. I may have been a newcomer to the sport, but my spirit and tenacity spoke volumes. As the crowd roared and the final whistle blew, I knew that this was only the beginning. Lacrosse had become an integral part of my life and I was determined to take it to even greater heights. The 2023 World Lacrosse Men's World Championship Asia Pacific Qualifier in Korea proved that, and I was able to make my mark once again.

This journey is not just about lacrosse; it's about breaking boundaries, defying expectations, and showcasing the power of determination. I have learned that no dream is too ambitious and no goal is beyond reach. My story is a testament to the fact that hard work, dedication, and unwavering passion can turn a novice into a national team player. As I step onto the field under the bright lights, I carry with me the hopes and dreams of a big family. I am Siwei Fan, the embodiment of a relentless pursuit of excellence, and I am ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead. My lacrosse journey is far from over, and the world hasn't yet seen the teenager from China who dared to dream big.
